0

Lauren Handel Zander is a renowned life coach who inspires individuals, corporations, and educational institutions alike to embrace individuality and foster purposeful living. Her unique, powerful voice, along with her contagious confidence and no-B.S. approach to life coaching, is a recipe for success for this mentor. Since she began coaching about 20 years ago, Lauren has grown her personal practice into a full-blown coaching service with over 60 employees.

Lauren Handel Zander’s approach to coaching stems from her self-titled practice, The Handel Method. The Handel Method is a guided, step-by-step process that facilitates self-discovery on an individual and/or collective level. Today, the program is taught at over 35 universities and learning institutions across the country.

Lauren’s latest endeavor, InnerU, is a more personal and affordable way to access her coaching services. Instead of one-on-one meetings and calls, this program features audio recordings of Lauren, along with clear assignments that allow you to do the work on your own time. You won’t find any played-out mantras, dismissive platitudes, or quick-fixes in Lauren’s programs, which is what makes them truly transformative for so many of her clients.

Name: Lauren Handel Zander

Company: Handel Group

Title: Co-founder and Chairwoman

Current home base: New York

Originally from: Long Island (pronounced as one word)

Your superpower:

You know how Superman (fine, if he were real) was gifted with x-ray vision, enabling him to see through walls? I can hear through narratives. I can hear everything you’re not saying. Disconcerting? Nah. It’s terribly useful, not just for my profession, but for my clients’ happiness.

One thing on your bucket list:

I giggled with glee as I typed this, so it must be top of the list these days: My husband, David, wants to get an RV and travel the world. I get to paint, be with my man, coach anyone and everyone for free, and make crafts.

A woman in history you admire & why:

Carol Burnett. She was a crusader whose genius, art, and hilarity defied the logic and prejudices of the time. What she accomplished, got away with in her skits, and got claps for was remarkable and revolutionary.

A (current) woman you admire & why:

Alicia Keys. Never in my life have I met a person who is so present and so in love with humanity. She not only makes you feel great about yourself, she interacts with everyone, one to one, as equals. Few people have as much soul, heart, talent, and love for others as she.

Quote/piece of advice that you live by:

Live transparently. If you [want to] do something [but] you couldn’t tell everyone about [it], then don’t do it.

What inspired you to start your current venture?

Have a seat. Almost 19 years ago, I invented myself as a sole practitioner and launched a business out of my bedroom. Why did I do it? What I had found was that no one was really asking the right questions. No one was really teaching us how to live a life worth living. We are all so busy just reacting to life, reading 700 books we’re going to forget, getting into college, paying off college, and achieving all of our goals that we’re not really designing our dream life at all.

We’re so much greater and more capable than this, except we’re not breaking into our life and discovering our real voice, our real truth, and our real ability to live a life we care so much more about than the one we’re seemingly stuck in. I began coaching and developing my method to help change that and to help people to break into their own lives.

I’ve been coaching for over 20 years now. I developed The Handel Method, a step-by-step process that’s been taught at over 35 universities and institutes of learning across the country. In time, I turned my practice into an international coaching company with over 60 employees.

What are you & your company doing to make history today?

We’re bringing coaching to the MASSES! On March 20, we’re re-launching Inner.U: Learn to Human Better. This is Humaning 101  it teaches you how to hack into your own life, see the whole picture, and connect your dots. It’s the class we never had in high school, but seriously needed. Hmm. Humaning vs. Precalculus?

Exactly…

This launch is near and dear to my heart. It has been my dream for two decades to bring my coaching method to the world in an accessible and affordable way, and now it’s here! It’s 12 chapters of audio coaching from me with homework assignments and fully interactive features that sync up with your calendar. There are no coals to walk over. No mantras. No quick fixes. This is a wake-up call-to-arms for you to step up, do the work, and be who you’ve always wanted to be: you, only better.

What is one thing you and your company have accomplished that you are most proud of?

Breaking into the education system. [It’s] not necessarily the most lucrative of business plans, but in the name of legacy and making the largest impact on society one human at a time, it’s pretty pride-worthy. Fifteen years later, The Handel Method is being taught at over 35 institutes of learning across the country, from MIT to Stanford Graduate School of Business to NYU to the New York Public School System. We have our eyes (and hearts) set on the foster care system next.

What is one project you are currently working on that you are most excited about?

Inner.U, Inner.U, Inner.U all the way! We’re offering the course to individuals AND corporations, who are now catching up with us and caring not only about transforming their company’s culture one employee at a time, but investing in their employees’ happiness and development.

What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to other female founders & change-makers?

Fly your freak flag.

Huh?

There really are things about you – traits, mannerisms, a style – which are wholly “you.” Those idiosyncrasies, which are unique to you and possibly irksome and annoying to others, are what I call your “freak flag”. Most of us are either tripping on our own freak flag or hiding it. But by the very nature of a freak flag, I think, it is impossible to fly it at half-mast. We’re here to either fly it, fix it, or fold it.

You get the idea.

As founders and change-makers, the more you deeply know yourself, both your superpowers and your kryptonite, the more you can fly your freak flag proudly, live freely, and not have to hide, overcompensate, or find a workaround.

Fun fact about yourself:

I paint; from canvases to guitars to shoes to hats, you name it, wear it, love it, I paint it. But I don’t just paint, I dot. So you see, I not only figuratively help clients connect the dots in their life, I literally dot, whenever, whatever, and wherever I can.

Is your company is currently hiring or looking for partnerships? If so, where can readers go to find more information?

Yes, always! We love to play with likeminded groups. You can email us at coach@handelgroup.com.
