If the current political landscape has you horrified, here’s How to resist like a boss

OK first of all, take a deep breath and step away from the news feed.

You heard me. Yes, we know it is addictive to scroll endlessly through posts about how Trump will ruin us all, the Handmaid’s Tale is our reality, the plague is waking up as a result of the melting ice caps due to climate change, and how Putin is watching you while you sleep. Ugh!

So. Many. Deep. Breaths.

Honor Your Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Most psychologists would agree that the key to brainwashing is repetition. Even if they are different topics of apocalyptic panic, the majority of what is available to us is clickbait riddled with panic, outrage and sadness. Even if you don’t recognize it yet, it will soon make you hardwired for fear and despair, just as easily as the Stanford Prison Experiment.

If you are convinced you are in mortal danger, your nervous system will react as such. This doesn’t make for a good Jedi. I mean, a warrior in “The Resistance.”

Not to say that these are not gravely troubling times. But we must regain our inner strength in order to resist. So if limiting your news consumption or refraining from yet another Facebook fight with your racist uncle makes you feel more even-keeled, go for it.

Before your FOMO sets in, relax. You will never be so oblivious to the outside world that you are completely uninformed, but you also don’t have to participate in today’s extreme “breaking news” culture that is just short of being dubbed “tragedy porn.”

Taking care of yourself is paramount.

Put it in your schedule right next to…

Call your Congressman about the latest terrible bill.

Calling Congress is one of the most effective ways to resist. I have been on every side of the political fight for over a decade and let me tell you that electeds hate being hassled by people who can vote for them. I wish I could say that every politician was led by a moral compass and the crucial duty of upholding the Constitution, but truly most just want to keep their job.

Lucky for you, this means you will be empowered at least every election year, if you remind them that they work for you. Part of the Senate is up for re-election soon and they currently hold the fate of health care in their hands, so this would be a perfect example of when to call your Senator.

Go to govtrack.us to find out who represents you or use an app like Countable that makes advocacy as simple as ordering food online.

Think About Where Your Efforts Are Best Spent

In order to resist like a boss, you have to think like a boss. Bosses rarely do anything that is inefficient. So you might want to evaluate your audience, your goals, and put down the protest sign.

I came from the labor movement and there’s nothing like a good march or strike. Those are excellent if you know that your targeted audience will buckle to pressure and public shame. Sadly, our President is not one of those people. Not only does he rarely show shame or remorse for his actions, but he behaves like a narcissistic sociopath, who sees all attention as good attention. I highly doubt he is at all bothered by the endless protests in front of Trump Tower, rather protesters are reinforcing his power and contributing to him having the most-uttered name in recent history.

Monumental shows of force like the Womens’ March are not only important but sculpt societies. But a protest march every day of the week may not have the same impact, thus rendering it inefficient. Instead, use your power of persuasion to create real change.

You can Give Some of Your Time or Money or Both

Campaigns to unseat Republicans in the 2018 midterm elections are mounting now and need your help. Volunteering to canvass (door-to-door) or phone-banking, cost nothing but can change history. And if you can’t get out to a district that needs you, then donate a few bucks. Seriously, if every person who marched since November gave the amount of a Starbucks coffee to a “Resistance PAC” or the DNC, we would have coffers that could rival the Koch brothers.

Power is in numbers so you are never too insignificant to change the tide.

Vote for Cryin’ Out Loud

It should go without saying but this also means, VOTE!!! Vote in every election. Call your Board of Elections now and make sure you are registered properly for the primaries (just do a google search for their number!) and bring friends with you to the polls.

Ask These 6 Questions When Voting

Bosses know strategy.

Part of the reason the evil empire seems to win a lot is because they can out-game true believers like us. We need to learn from their tactics and use them for good. Sometimes you need to put aside your quest for things perfectly aligned with your ideology, in order to prevent defeat or something diabolically opposed to everything you believe in.

I’m not saying “sell out.” I’m saying weigh the consequences and think through the political game.

Not every Democrat running to unseat a Republican will be your knight-in-shining-Bernie-armor, but ask yourselves these questions:

  • Did the Republican incumbent vote for the AHCA?
  • Show signs of bigotry?
  • Or otherwise clash with my beliefs?

If yes to any of the above, ask yourself:

  • Does the Democratic opponent believe that women are people and deserve power over their own bodies?
  • Does s/he believe science and facts exist?
  • Does s/he understand that standing up for equal rights and justice for one group doesn’t mean we take anything away from someone else?

If the answer to those is yes, help that candidate get elected.

A status quo progressive will make me happier than a right-wing Republican any day of the week. It’s not perfect but that’s the truth.

Many felt there would be no difference between Hillary or Donald in the White House. Sadly now we can look no further than “Muslim ban” Parts 1 and 2 to know that this notion turned out to be undeniably false.

Think about this:

The focus for the next two election cycles must be regaining power from the clutches of the Tea Party, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Trump and the like. We must return to a time when the very tenets of American freedom, justice, and democracy weren’t overlooked because someone yelled fake news or alternative facts. Once that happens, we can have the luxury of being more choosy.

Keep Doin’ You

Lastly, the best way to resist like a boss, is to be a boss.

No I don’t mean that you must be a successful entrepreneur, but you must remain your authentic self and remember you still have the choice to be awesome.

Time and again in history, dark times test the resilience of our humanity. Regimes have only succeeded where people have capitulated to the idea of inevitable defeat and ceased to exist as they once were.

Communism toppled religion, creativity, and individualism across much of the world, but history applauds the sometimes indignant resiliency of the “American spirit.” In the 1960s we were a nation divided in many ways – plagued with feelings of outrage and doom – but we stood up to it all by becoming leaders in science, culture, protest songs, vigilance, and perennial optimism. We are living what I believe to be those generations’ “60s,” wreft with civil rights debates, war, xenophobia and Russians.

So like the generations before us, we must continue to espouse ideas of equality, love, justice, and hope. We must continue to use our voice to inspire each other and create everything and anything we can to prove that we will not be beat down. Live your best life. Love your friends and family. Enjoy yourself.

Live, for those who do not seek positivity in life will perish in this darkness.

Use your voice. Live your best life. Love your friends and family. Enjoy yourself.
